Female authors have always faced a massive gender gap in terms of getting their work read. Especially when it comes to literary classics. In the past, some women had to use male names just to get their books published. In Brazil, over the last 50 years, more than 70% of books published by major Brazilian publishers were written by men.

In partnership with the Rio Grande do Sul Public Library, we created the project #ReadAWoman to change this story. We hacked the visibility of male authors and turned their books into recommendations of works written by women.

We created a database with more than 300 recommendations cross-referencing male authors and their works with corresponding works by female authors mapped from the Public Library's collection. Using word recognition technology, all you have to do is visit the website and point the camera of your smartphone at a classic book written by a man.
